In the summer of 2008, ABC Family aired a low-rent Men in Black knockoff starring Matt Keeslar and Natalie Morales as a straight-laced secret agent and his wise-cracking sidekick / ordinary-girl recruited into a shadowy organization fighting aliens and other weirdness that threatens our very existence, respectively, which I should point out was based on the comic by Grillo-Marxuach and Les McClaine and in so doing am deep into run-on sentence territory. What the show lacked in CGI budget it made up for in sly humor. Unfortunately, the sly humor went over the heads of the folks at home, who turned their Nielsen boxes to more predicable fare like Chefs who Tauntand Navy Crimes Patriotism Hour. ABC pulled the plug after one season, just as the show was finding its groove.
So it goes. The light that burns twice as bright gets curb-stomped by network execs. Or something. Metaphor has never been my strong suit. What is my strong suit is buying DVDs of canceled TV shows. Which you should do. To The Middleman. How many shows feature trout-craving zombies (!!!!), a Vlad the Impaler ventriloquist doll, cursed tubas, and the devil literally wearing Prada? The answer is one (SPOILER!). So get in on the action and help a growing fan base force a return of The Middleman to a screen of some size, be it large, small, or in-between. As master Ping teaches us: the martial arts are the most confrontational of all the arts.
