Happy Birthday Leona Marshall Libby!

U. Chicago Reactor Group Photo, 1942
Celebration. University of Chicago, 1942. The occasion? The world's first man-made nuclear chain reaction (the reactor was built under the squash courts. Take that, university Safety Officer!). Big shots in the photo include Leo Szilard (in overcoat) and Enrico Fermi (first row at left). Leona Woods Marshall Libby was the only woman present at the event; she was also the only woman physicist who worked on the Manhattan project. Dr. Libby went on to do research in particle physics and cosmology until her death in 1986. She recounted her experiences in The Uranium People, a memoir of working in science back when women weren't scientists, they were dames who fetched the sammiches.
